The social atmosphere of games, from promotions to tailgates, is just as important as the game itself and Purdue is making strides to enhance the fan experience.

 

Their first step in the process of creating memorable events is planning and gathering information – what do fans like? What don’t they like? What do they want to see more of? Once you understand that, asserts Purdue’s fan experience assistant Todd Morrissey, “then you can come up with a plan.”

 

One of the litmus tests for the new initiative is the 211 Session, starting two hours and 11 minutes prior to each game as an homage to Ross-Ade's nickname "The Furnace” in which water boils at 211 degrees Fahrenheit.

 

"2 hours and 11 minutes before each home game, Coach Hazell and the football team will take over Mackey Arena to fire up the fan base for that day's contest," Morrissey said. "Purdue's drum line will be on the floor of Mackey, and the entire 360-member band will come through the Mackey tunnel to join them for the Purdue Fanfare. The cheerleaders, Purdue Pete and other spirit elements will be integrally involved."

 

New head coach Hazell has been integral in pushing for a more fun environment, and keeping the marketing team hopping.

 

From opening the doors during workouts to pre-game rallies and fun promotional activities, Purdue’s football team is attacking the atmosphere like it attacks its opponent. And feedback has so far been positive, with fans enjoying a carnival-like feeling for the entire day.

 

Jon Michel, a junior in the College of Engineering, said he is just as excited for the game day activities as he is for the games themselves.

 

"There are many things to do on game-day," Michel said. "When you wake up on Saturdays, the atmosphere on campus is like nothing else. Purdue does a really great job building excitement for the games."
