President Daniels Initiated into Lambda Iota
For eight years, we called him “Governor.” For the past three years, we have called him “President.” And in 2013, we added a title to the resume of Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr.: “Brother.” The son of Allegheny Phi Gam Mitchell E. Daniels, Sr. ’44, Brother Daniels graduated in 1971 from Princeton where student social life is built around eating clubs, not fraternities or sororities. As he explains, “Had I attended a school with Greek fraternities, there is little doubt I’d have been a Fiji four decades ago.” On October 15, 2013, the brothers of Lambda Iota formally initiated President Daniels into Phi Gamma Delta at Purdue. We are pleased to announce that our fellow Fiji brother, Tom Spurgeon ’61, has been named a 2014 winner of the Distinguished Fiji Award. As described in the spring 2015 issue of The Phi Gamma Delta, the "Archons established the Distinguished Fiji Award in 1964. It is presented annually to no more than six graduate brothers who are deserving of recognition for their faithful and unselfish service to Phi Gamma Delta or their special contribution to mankind and society at large." We all have them — keepsakes and heirlooms handed down from parents, grandparents or others who not only wanted to ensure their safekeeping but also to pass on their significance and related stories. Often times, they take the form of pieces of jewelry, antiques, yellowed wedding announcements from the newspaper or a clip of hair saved in an old book. For Fiji Brother Chuck Armstrong ’64, he has been fortunate to pass on a few things to other generations. But he can’t put them in a box.
